Dan Acts Like A Dick On DeviantArt

Part 1: Writers are fucked.

Years ago, I asked Yahoo where a good place to put my writing was.  I was told DeviantArt. I asked friends and family.  They all said DeviantArt.  When I found out what DeviantArt was, I thought it was a place for all types of art to be shared with the world.  I thought it was the Facebook for creative people.  And it pretty much is.  All over DeviantArt, there is drawings, paintings, photography, sculptures, animations, everythi….oh…yeah and some writing.  But oh man!  All of those pictures are so amazing!  They are so vivid and other positive compliments!  This person deserves their 1,009,234,567 favorites and watchers for the two pictures they put up!  Oh….here is poem.  Hmm, that’s a good poem.  Hey, this guy has over two hundred submissions.  This is some quality stuff!  He definitely deserves his three or four watchers and like the two people who favorites his things.  What a great writer!  I am glad his work is being known and acknowledged!

I can not be the only one who notices this messed up pattern.  A single drawing on this website, and you are a goddamn celebrity.  Favorites and watchers just flood your knickers.  But you could be a modern Shakespeare who uploads your entire portfolio for years and years, and you’d be lucky to know maybe six friends that will watch you because they remembered they made an account a while ago.  There is without a doubt a crap ton of good writing on this website.  But every time you go through the daily deviations, or browse through the What’s Hot and Undiscovered sections, what is mostly there?  Drawings and pictures, with maybe a piece of writing every now and then.  It just feels like writers get completely overshadowed by other people who like to fucking doodle on Windows Paint.  If Dante’s Inferno was released today for the first time ever, some stupid recolor of a Sonic The Hedgehog character would get more goddamn publicity on this website.

“Ooh!  This guy turned Shadow green and pink with a free computer program!  I can taste his originality and amazing creative prowess!  Hmm..what’s this?  The expertly written tale about a man’s journey through the layers of hell?  Ehh, sounds boring.  But I love that shade of green he used on Shadow!”

Like.. is this what happens?  Just because you see something, you like it more immediately?  Just because the picture is uploaded, it’s art?  What if my phone camera went off by accident, and the picture is just a goddamn skin tone blur?  Will some mook on this website prefer that just because its visual over a literal fucking epic?  I have seen my share of shitty fucking ‘art’ on this website, everyone has.  But at the same time, this shitty art gets a bigger following than a decent piece of writing.  Do people just scroll through on this website until they see either boobs or a pony?  Any time they see writing, do they just disregard it?  I tell ya man, any writer that thinks he or she is gonna get a decent following on this website has been misled completely.  But hey, at least people still appreciate photographs of some random tree in the goddamn woods.  God knows it takes a special individual to do that and not write an original writing piece.

This has been my first session of being a dick and ranting about and on DeviantArt.
If you didn’t have a hissy-fit and tried finding evidence that disproves my observations already, good for you.  Photograph your cat doing nothing, that’s a guaranteed fifty watchers.

Stay tuned for my next session of being a dick on DeviantArt, in which I exclaim my opinions on the writers and writings that actually do have a following. Whoop, did I say ‘writers and writings’?  I meant Fan fiction, which is not even to close actual writing.  My bad :D
Basically a 'Dan Rant's About..'

I have had thoughts about the way things work on DeviantArt for years now, and its about time I have finally said them.  Why am I addressing this series of rants as "Dan Acts Like A Dick"?  Becuase my opinions are definetely going to be extremely unpopular ones, and feelings will be hurt.  Probably yours as well, the one is who reading this right now. Wait a second...people don't read on DeviantArt!  Thats what this whole rant is about in the first place!  Don't you love irony?

Ahh, Dan, I am sorry that you are so frustrated.

If someone was to ask me (and I am a professional writer) where to post their writing to get it read, dA would not be on the list of places I would put it.  I've been a member here for many years, I came because so many of my friends are visual artists, and they were all here, and I just wanted to 'hang out' with them.

If someone is looking for original writing, they go to the book store, whether it be digital or brick and mortar.  If one wants to read poetry, then one tends to get a poetry journal of some sort , so that the 'bad' stuff has already been vetted for them.  People don't tend to come to places, even an artists' community like dA, to read.

The big problem is--it is easier to look at art than it is to read something.  Reading something takes time, more than the few seconds it takes to look a picture.  People are just not apt to put the time into reading original writing in this kind of venue.

(Now, when you write your next post, and you talk about fanfiction, we might have to have words ;) ).

I see dA as a place for me to hang out with my artist friends, (and also to indulge in my dirty little secret--fanfic).   It definitely isn't a real venue for a writer.
